We were lucky enough to stay about 100 yards from the Duomo, so we saw
it everytime we left and came back to the hostel. This is probably the
most amazing building I've ever seen. I'm not sure if the pictures
will do it justice. We also made the trek up the 450+ stairs to see the view from the top.
I would highly recommend this as one of the best things to do in
Florence, but the climb is not for the claustraphobic. You climb an
extremely small, steep, and tightly spiraled staircase with little
headroom and windows. The building itself is seemingly bomb-proof with
very thick concrete, so when it is full with tourists (and the smell
of tourists) it is stuffy and somewhat overwhelming. However, once you emerge at the top you realize the climb was well
worth the trouble.
