So I am going to be completely non-original here and say that I think
Gaudi's buildings are the coolest I've ever seen. First of all, the Sagrada Familia church is absolutely breathtaking,
even though it's not finished (and may never be finished.) I love the
story behind it too - that Gaudi became so obsessed with the project
in the last years of his life that he moved there. And that his death
was actually caused because he was distracted while staring at it one
day, and was hit by a tram. And that's why there are no trams in
Barcelona today. In spite of the fact that The Sagrada Familia was started in 1882 and
is not finished totally baffles me. According to everyone we've talked
to, that's just the way things go in Spain. The local saying is
"manana manana." (In other words, "I'll get to that tomorrow.") Some
people say the building may NEVER be finished. The supposed completion
date is 2026, but with two subway lines going under the building, and
a tower proposed that is twice as tall as the ones in place, the sheer
size and lack of stablity of the church may keep the project from
being completed. As cool as the Sagrada Familia was to see, my favorite Gaudi building
is his apartment complex - La Padrera. It's got this crazy ergonomic,
trippy design, and you could see the entire city from up top. I don't think I've seen anything like Gaudi's style anywhere else in
Europe, or America for that matter. I'm surprised his work hasn't been
emulated more often, because it is SO SO SO cool.
